Funding
The full funding picture for any perpetual: the live rate and its leading indicator, history-derived averages and momentum, and the raw record of every payment actually made.
/v1/funding/{symbol}/historyFunding is the mechanism that keeps a perpetual future glued to its index: when the perp trades above fair value, longs periodically pay shorts (positive rate); below, shorts pay longs (negative). Because the rate is set by positioning, it doubles as the market's most honest sentiment gauge: it is money actually changing hands, not an opinion poll. Extreme funding identifies crowded trades, and crowded trades are where squeezes start: heavily negative funding means a crowded short side, and any bounce forces shorts to buy back, fueling itself.
Osiris exposes funding in two places. The current state (rate, premium, 24h average, trend, APR, next payment time) lives in the funding family of the Metrics endpoint, refreshed every 60 seconds. This endpoint adds the raw history: the actual payments made, newest first, up to the last 50. On the standard 8-hour cycle that is over two weeks of record (some pairs pay every 4 or even 1 hour; the history reveals each pair's true cadence from its timestamps).

time | Payment timestamp, ms. Consecutive gaps reveal the pair's funding interval (8h standard, 4h/1h on some pairs). |
rate | The rate actually paid, as a decimal: 0.0001 = 0.01% of position notional per payment. Positive: longs paid shorts. |
Reading rates in context
| Rate (8h) | Annualized | Reading |
|---|---|---|
+0.0001 | ~+11% | The neutral baseline; a balanced market defaults here. |
+0.0005 | ~+55% | Longs paying heavily: crowded long side, long-squeeze fuel on any dip. |
0 to −0.0001 | 0 … −11% | Mild short bias, common in drawdowns, not yet remarkable. |
−0.0005 and beyond | −55%… | Heavily crowded shorts: the classic short-squeeze setup, where bounces become self-fueling. |
What the history adds over the snapshot
- Persistence vs blip: one extreme payment is noise; six in a row is a regime. The snapshot's
AVG_24Hcompresses this; the history lets you apply your own window and threshold. - Carry accounting: summing
rate × positionover payments while you held is your exact funding P&L, the input for evaluating carry strategies (collecting funding while hedged elsewhere). - Normalization: a pair whose funding has sat at +0.03% for a week has a different "neutral" than one at baseline; scoring today's rate against the pair's own history beats a global threshold.
- The leading indicator on top: pair the history with
PREMIUMfrom the metrics snapshot. The live mark-vs-index basis moves before the next rate is set, so premium diverging from the recent history is your earliest warning that funding is turning.
/v1/rankings/funding is for (one request, ranked by magnitude). Use the history endpoint to investigate the pairs that scan surfaces.
